DescriptionRemains of the Fukui Castle (福井城). Griffis's note on the back reads: "Ramparts and towers gone. Moat and walls of the great castle area within which lived the samurai or knights." The castle was built in early 1600s and was home to the Matsudaira, the daimyo of Fukui. After the Meiji Restoration in 1871, most of the buildings were destroyed and many of the moats were filled in, and the area has since been used for Fukui's government offices and other public buildings.
NoteIn the early 1900s, William Elliot Griffis obtained a group of mounted albumen photographs of Fukui, which included images of moats, castles, shrines, temples, schools, and street scenes, along with a set of photographs in postcard format and miscellaneous photographs. This item is part of that broader group of early 1900s Fukui visual materials collected by Griffis.
