DescriptionThe records of the Jersey City BPW consist of approximately 1.2 cubic feet of material spanning the period 1948 to 2002, with some gaps. The papers are housed in three manuscript boxes and one oversize folder. The collection contains bylaws, minutes, membership rosters, reports, financial documents, correspondence, newsletters, awards, and newspaper clippings.
The collection is divided into nine series: I. Bylaws, II. Minutes and Agendas, III. Newsletters, IV. Membership Lists, V. President’s Files, VI. General Files, VII. Financial Documents, VIII. District Files, and IX. Certificates and Awards. The President’s Files series is further arranged into three subseries, and the Financial Documents series is further arranged into six subseries.
NoteThe Jersey City Business and Professional Women (BPW), a member of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc., was organized on April 5, 1929 at a meeting in the Hotel Plaza with 22 prospective members present. A Jersey City attorney named Miss Mollie Swid took the initiative in organizing the Jersey City club. First officers of the Jersey City club were Miss Mollie Swid, president; Miss May Carty, first vice-president; Miss Marie Molineaux, corresponding secretary, and Miss Elsie Rummel, recording secretary.
The purpose of the club, as stated in the club’s bylaws, was to elevate the standards for women in business and professions, to promote the interest of business and professional women, to bring about a spirit of cooperation among business and professional women, and to extend opportunities to business and professional women through education along lines of industrial, scientific, and vocational activities. In July 1929, at the 11th Annual Convention of the New Jersey Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc., in Atlantic City, the Jersey City BPW was accepted as a member of the New Jersey Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. and the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. (JCBPW Directory, 1967, pp. 4-5). It was incorporated on February 23, 1967.
The Jersey City BPW is no longer active. Its members voted to disband as of June 1, 2002, and the final meeting was held on May 22, 2002.
