DescriptionThe documents in this collection span from 1959 to 1967 and focus on the events leading up to in preparation and the execution of the Rutgers Bicentennial. As these are documents from the Public Relations Department at Rutgers University, there is a distinct focus on activities relating to the press, including the creation of stock stories and in garnering press coverage for the many events that were produced for the Bicentennial through encouraging the press to cover the events and releasing press releases through the Rutgers News Service. Not every Bicentennial Event, however, is covered by this collection.
There is also an abundance of newspaper clippings, which may be the Public Relations Department keeping track of the stories and events for which they were able to get coverage. Notable events include, then Vice President Hubert Humphrey’s speaking at the September 22, 1966 Convocation and Ayn Rand speaking at the Intercollegiate Student Conference.
Many of the documents in this collection are of correspondence, either between the Public Relations department and the public, the press, or other organizations involved with the Bicentennial activities. Interestingly, this collection provides many of the letters between University President Mason Gross and the Office of the President of the United States on the possibly of the President visiting the Campus.
This collection can also provide a good overview of what goes into planning such large yearlong event administratively for Rutgers University, as there are many documents provided to the Public Relations Department from the other Bicentennial Commissions and Committees, presumably to keep them abreast of any new developments that may warrant press coverage, as well as documents from other Universities describing their planning and budgets for similar events.
The Public Relations Department was also heavily involved in the creation and distribution of the souvenirs and other ephemera created for the Rutgers Bicentennial. The papers surrounding this are included in this Collection, including many Proofs and examples of these souvenirs. This includes a campaign to create a Rutgers Bicentennial Commemorative Postage Stamp which resulted in a Rutgers Bicentennial Stamp cancelation.
Overall this collection provides an interesting insight into the public relations and media environment of the late 1950’s and 1960’s as well as a look into how Rutgers reflected back on its 200th anniversary though the eyes of both the press and the Rutgers University administration.
