DescriptionThe Charles A. Philhower Collection was given to Special Collections between 1959 and 1962, the year of Philhower's death. The bulk of the collection remains together. Only two categories of manuscript material from it have been separately filed: certain items received prior to Philhower's death and several bodies of manuscripts which formed parts of previously established manucript collections.
The several finding aids which have been prepared to describe parts of the Philhower Collection are here assembled into one document. Three of the four finding aids included were compiled by students as projects relating to coursework in the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at Rutgers.
In addition to the present finding aid, two printed guides to the holdings of Special Collections also describe materials from the Philhower donation. Herbert F. Smith's "A Guide to the Manuscript Collection of the Rutgers University Library" (1964) includes descriptions of most of the manuscript material received from Philhower which was separately filed, as well as an incomplete description of the Charles A. Philhower Collection as a whole. Diaries forming a part of the collection are described in Donald A. Sinclair's "A Guide to the Manuscript Diaries and Journals in the Special Collections Department, Rutgers University" (1980).
