DescriptionThis dedication poem, "The Spirit of Co-Operation," was included in the event program for the 20th anniversary of the establishment of Free Acres. Free Acres was inspired by Henry George, who believed that land should be communally owned by citizens, and that citizens should use whatever income they made from the land as their means of living, not as tax payments to the government. However, the community recognized that it had civic responsibilities in paying some government taxes. Therefore, members of Free Acres who were landowners apportioned their land to the community, and non-land-owners rented it. This allowed equal access to natural resources. Tolerance and freedom from too many constricting laws were also practiced at Free Acres.
