DescriptionThis is an image of two pages from the 1862 property tax book of Egg Harbor City, NJ. Indices of the names found on these pages is part of this NJDH collection. A search by name of property owners in the indices will indicate the corresponding page from the tax book such as part of this record.

The original, 100 page book has been restored and is in the archives of the Egg Haror City Historical Society. The property tax book lists the names of owners, cities of residence of the property owners, type of building structure, and other information.

There are 12 columns on the two-page spread. The columns of information are, from left to right, as follows:

1. Name of property owner.


2. Place of residence of the owner.


3. Number and type of lot (C=city, g=Garden - for lots located between Bremen and Antwerp Avenues and between New York and Hamburg Avenues, F=farm - for lots outside Hamburg and Bremen Avenues, and H=harbor - for lots along the projected harbor along the river. The harbor was never developed.)


4. Block and Lot Number


5. Buildings/Structures (FH=frame house, BH=brick house, and SH=stone house.)


6. Real estate value including structures.


7. Personal property value.


8. Total taxable value.


9. Taxes on property.


10. Poll tax


11. Dog tax


12. Total taxes owed.
